Resident Doctors At Delta State Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH), Oghara, Plunge Into A Warning Strike

Breaking News! Resident Doctors at the Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH), Oghara, plunge into a week warning strike. In a letter for commencement of the strike action, the President of the association Dr. Jerry Isogun outlined some of the major issues resulting to the strike as follows;

1. Lack of trainers/consultants in Paediatics department which is affecting proper training of Specialist doctors, medical students and effective specialist care to patients which is the main reason why the hospital was established. He stated that the Association is demanding urgent employment of Paediatrians.

2.Lack of commitment by government to secure accreditation for some of the departments e. g Surgery, Internal Medicine (subspeciaties), Maxillofacial, Ophthalmology e.t.c. This has resulted in sending most of the Specialist Senior Registrars to other hospitals in other states thereby diverting the services mearnt for Deltans to other states yet they are being paid by the State Government. Also, these doctors are displaced from their family and love ones with all the attendant financial and psychological stress.

3.As we speak, the management of DELSUTH is owing residents doctors well over fifty million naira for the various sponsorship due to resident doctors. Sadly more debt is accumulating as more residents qualify for outside postings and examinations.

4. The entire hospital infrastructures are in a deplorable state. There is no functional thearter for surgeries to be done. Not less than two medical doctors have collapsed in the theatre recently while operating due to heat exhaustion yet no functional ambulance in the hospital.

5. The most frustrating aspect is that in the face of all these challenges, the hospital management decry a steady state of lack of adequate funding to run the hospital. One is left to wonder why!
Despite our repeated outcry and dialogues the management, the government has remained insensitive to the plight of the institution hence we have resorted to industrial dispute to drive home our point.

The president is calling on all well meaning Deltans and other unions to support their struggle for the soul of the only teaching hospital in the state to save her from going into extinction.
