Scoring a hat-trick in a World Cup is a relatively rare event as only 52 hat-tricks have been scored in over 800 matches in the 21 editions of the World Cup tournament.

The first hat-trick ever scored in the FIFA world cup tournament, was scored in July 1930 by American footballer, Bert Patenaude, and ever since then fifty (52) hat-tricks have been scored in the World cup tournament already.

The record number of hat-tricks in a single World Cup tournament is eight, however the only World Cup not to have at least one hat-trick scored was the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany.

4. GABRIEL BATISTUTA – ARGENTINA (2 HAT-TRICKS SCORED)

Gabriel Batistuta had his first World Cup hat-trick against Greece in 1994, while his second was in a 1998 group match against Jamaica, exactly four years later. Gabriel Batistuta became the first ever player to notch hat-tricks at successive World Cups.

3. GERD MULLER – GERMANY (2 HAT-TRICKS SCORED)

German International, Gerd Muller, became only the third player to ever achieve two hat-tricks in one World Cup, at the 1970 FIFA tournament. He scored hat-tricks in back-to-back matches for West Germany against Bulgaria and Peru at the 1970 World Cup.

2. JUST FONTAINE – FRANCE (2 HAT-TRICKS SCORED)

Just Fontaine, became the second player to ever achieve two hat-tricks in one World Cup, after he scored 3 goals against Paraguay and 4 against West Germany in the 1958, Sweden World Cup tournament. The French International Scored both at the Group Stage and Third Place matches respectively.

1. SANDOR KOCSIS – HUNGARY (2 HAT-TRICKS SCORED)

Hungarian Legend, Sandor Kocsis, was the first player recorded to have scored more than one world cup hat-tricks. He was the first player to score two hat-tricks in one world cup. The Hungarian scored in two consecutive group stage matches against, South Korea and West Germany, in the 1954 Switzerland, World Cup.
