Top Ten AFCON Highest Goal Scorers (See Who Tops The List)

The AFCON is no doubt the biggest sports event in the Africa continent, as it brings lots of excitements, thrills and showcases the best African football talents.

The African football championship is noted for the display of Africa’ finesse attackers and the goals they score. Goals are the finest highlights of any football competition and some of the greatest goals have been witnessed at the African Cup of Nations, AFCON.

In this piece, I will be taking you through a list of the AFCON all time highest goal scorers.

10. FRANCILEDO SANTOS (TUNISIA – 10 GOALS)

At number 10 is Tunisia International, Franciledo Santos. At the 2004 AFCON tournament, he played a great role in helping Tunisia win their first and only AFCON title till date. The tricky goal-poacher fired in 22 goals in 40 games while playing for Tunisia, with ten of those goals coming at the AFCON finals.

9. KALUSHA BWALYA (ZAMBIA – 10 GOALS)

Kalusha Bwalya on of Africa’s best left footers sits at number 9 in this list of AFCON highest goal scorers. The Zambian ended his career with 100 goals in 147 appearances. He was however able to score just 10 for his country in through out his play at the AFCON tournament.

8. MULAMBA NDAYE ( DR CONGO – 10 GOALS)

At number 8 is DR Congo (Formerly Zaire) International, Mulamba Ndaye. The DR Congo (Zaire) football legend was able to score just 10 goals in his entire feature in the AFCON tournament.

7. DIDIER DROGBA ( IVORY COAST – 11 GOALS)

Ivory coast’ all-time goal scorer, Didier Drogba sits at number 7 in this list of AFCON’ all time highest goal scorers. The Ivorian who was unable to win an AFCON Title for his country, was however able to score 11 AFCON goals in his amazing football career.

6. HOSSAM HASSAN ( EGYPT 11 GOALS)

At number 6 is Egyptian legend, Hossam Hassan. Hossam Hassan is till now Egypt’s highest goal scorer with 68 goals in 176 appearances. With 11 of those goals bagged at Africa’s biggest football tournament – AFCON.

5. PATRICK MBOMA ( CAMEROON – 11 GOALS)

Cameroon legend, Patrick Mboma sits at number 5 on our list of all time AFCON highest goal scorers. The Cameroon International was able to register 11 goals through out his feature at the AFCON tournament.

4. HASSAN EL SHAZLY ( EGYPT 12 GOALS)

At number 4 is Egyptian football legend, Hassan El Shazly. He has the most goals for Egypt at the AFCON tournament with 12 goals bagged to his name. He was able to win the highest goal scorer at the AFCON 1963 tournament with 6 goals to his name.

3. RASHIDI YEKINI ( NIGERIA – 13 GOALS)

Nigeria football legend and highest goal scorer, Rashidi Yekini sits at number 3 on this list of AFCON’ highest goal scorers. The Nigeria international scored the 13 goals at the tournament and this makes him the finest Nigerian striker to appear at the AFCON for yet a while.

2. LAURENT POKOU (IVORY COAST – 14 GOALS)

At number 2 is Ivorian football legend, Lauren Pokou. Pokou held the record for a long time before it got out-beaten by Samuel Eto. He was twice the highest goalscorer of the Africa Cup of Nations, scoring six goals in the 1968 tournament in Ethiopia and eight in the 1970 edition in Sudan. Pokou however ended his AFCON feature with 14 goals to his name.

1. SAMUEL ETO’O FILS (CAMEROON – 18 GOALS)

Having won the African Footballer Player of The Year Award for a record four time. Cameroon international Samuel Eto sits on the list as AFCON highest goal scorer with 18 goals to his name. Samuel Eto’o Fils’ 18 goals record in six African Cup Nations tournaments may take another generation to beaten.

  1. Yekini was really a superb player. And I tell u, had Nigeria featured in 96 and 98 nation’s cup, Yeking would’ve be too of this chat. Kudos to him even in the grave
