E-learning can’t work in Nigeria, it requires special skills- ASUU

Talking about virtual learning or online learning, can it really work in Nigeria? How equipped and trained are these lecturers? Do we even have the infrastructures in our Universities? These were the questions from the Academic Staff Union of Universities as some part of the country talks about E-learning.

E-learning or Electronic Learning is a learning system that we can obtain through the internet using electronic devices. One good thing about E-Learning, you can receive the lectures anytime and anywhere. All you need is a good internet connection and device.

According to the President of ASUU, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, online teaching requires some special pedagogical skills and training of lecturers who would be involved and also serious orientation which may take time for them to attune their minds. Apart from these, most schools don’t have the requirements and it may hinder the quality in terms of content and even presentation will be watered down.

“I am even focused on tertiary institution now because I don’t want to go to the lower level. When they don’t have the skills, they will water down the quality and terms of content generation. What you give to the student, they should be able to digest and that also requires skills in preparation.” Prof. Biodun said.

Most lecturers find it difficult to pass information to the student face-face, now imagine how the online teaching would be.
