“It’s Suicidal To Reopen Schools Now, The Following Conditions Must Be Met” – ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has kicked against the reopening of schools by the Federal Government due to the current health challenge facing the country and world at large.

According to the ASUU National President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, who was speaking to newsmen, made it known that the government must make resource available in order for schools to meet proposed conditions by the Federal Ministry of Education.

Prof. Biodun also urged the government to provide the ideal and conducive environment and also the conditions from the Nigeria Centre for Disease and Control will be fully carried out across the country before reopening can occur.

The ASUU president listed some of the measures that should be put in place;

  1. Provision of materials for regular hand washing.
  2. Provision of face mask.
  3. Isolation space.
  4. Hands sanitizers.

“When it comes to public health, it’s something that should not be left in the hands of individuals but the Federal Government. The Federal Government, should be ready to lead the way as many government-owned schools don’t have financial capacity to meet the outlined conditions.”

Nigeria as a country is yet to meet the conditions spelt out by NCDC and the World Health Organization (WHO) as some many people fail to even wear their face mask not to talk of keep a proper social distancing. It seems we are in for a long ride.
