For the second time in just three months, Netflix has announced a price hike for its subscribers in Nigeria, with increases of at least 40%.
The American streaming service cited its continued investment in new TV shows, movies, and product features, as well as adjustments to local market conditions such as taxes and inflation, as reasons for the price changes.
Netflix’s subscription plans in Nigeria now cost significantly more:
- Mobile Plan: Now ₦2,200 (up 83% from ₦1,200) – for one user on a mobile device.
- Basic Plan: Now ₦3,500 (up from ₦2,900) – for standard viewing on one screen.
- Standard Plan: Now ₦5,000 (up from ₦4,000) – for HD viewing on two screens simultaneously.
- Premium Plan: Now ₦7,000 (up from ₦5,700) – for Ultra HD viewing on four screens and downloads on six devices.
Despite being Africa’s most populous country, Nigeria represents a relatively small portion of Netflix’s market, accounting for 10.5% of subscribers in Africa according to Omdia Research. Netflix has also adjusted its prices in other international markets, including the United States, United Kingdom, and France.
This price increase comes amid Nigeria’s struggles with rising inflation and a cost of living crisis. Earlier this year, other streaming services, such as Multichoice’s Showmax, also faced public backlash after raising their subscription fees.
