Tragedy struck Jos North, Plateau State, on Sunday night, 29th March 2026, as gunmen attacked the Angwa Rukuba community, killing several residents, including students. Eyewitnesses described attackers on motorcycles opening fire sporadically, causing chaos and panic, with people fleeing in all directions.
Local reports suggest at least 10 people were killed, though authorities have yet to confirm an official number. Videos circulating online show graphic scenes of bodies lying on the ground, fuelling outrage among residents.
In response, the Plateau State government imposed a 48-hour curfew from midnight 29th March to 1st April, aiming to restore order and allow security forces to stabilize the area.
The timing of the attack, reportedly on Palm Sunday, has sparked claims on social media that the killings were a targeted religious attack, with some netizens calling it a massacre against Christians. Authorities, however, have not confirmed the identities, motives, or affiliations of the victims.
Jos and surrounding areas have experienced cycles of deadly clashes over the past two decades, and this latest incident has raised fears of escalating tensions in an already fragile region.
