Delta State Governor Approves ₦200,000 Salary Boost for Doctors

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has approved a big boost in doctors’ salaries to keep medical professionals working in the state, raising entry-level doctors’ pay by ₦200,000 and adding a ₦100,000 tax-free allowance for house officers.

This comes as part of his administration’s “MORE Special Allowance” plan, which stands for Meaningful development, Opportunities for all, Realistic reforms, and Enhanced peace and security, aiming to improve life and services across the state. Health Commissioner Dr. Joseph Onojaeme explained at a press briefing on March 7 that entry-level doctors will now earn ₦570,000 per month, up from ₦370,000, while house officers will take home at least ₦350,000, up from around ₦250,000, making the profession more attractive for young doctors.

The decision follows a low turnout of doctors in the ongoing recruitment for over 700 health positions, despite receiving more than 6,000 applications.

Dr. Onojaeme said the salary increase is meant to encourage more qualified doctors to join, and he assured the public that recruitment will be strictly merit-based without any inducements. This move reflects a clear effort by the state government to strengthen healthcare by rewarding talent and addressing staff shortages, while making medical careers in Delta more rewarding and sustainable.
