NFVCB Warns Filmmakers and Skit Makers Against Depicting Same-Sex Relationships In Movies.

The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has issued a stern warning to Nigerian filmmakers and skit makers about producing and streaming content that depicts same-sex relationships.

In a statement shared on Instagram on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, the NFVCB expressed its concerns regarding the activities of certain “unscrupulous” content creators. The agency specifically called out the presence of same-sex content on social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and Twitter.

The NFVCB reminded content creators that the portrayal of same-sex relationships, whether directly or indirectly, is a violation of Nigerian law. The statement emphasized, “Filmmakers/Content Creators should be reminded that it is an offence to directly or indirectly make public show (exhibition) of same-sex relationship in Nigeria.”

Additionally, the board highlighted the legal requirement for content creators to obtain classification from the NFVCB before distributing or displaying any film content, including skits and musical videos. “It is also an offence to distribute or exhibit any Film or Video content including skits and musical videos on any platform without recourse to the National Film and Video Censors Board for classification,” the statement read.

The NFVCB assured the public that it is collaborating with relevant security agencies to identify and take action against those violating these regulations. “The Board therefore wishes to state categorically that we are working with relevant security agencies to track the individuals and production companies involved, and will stop at nothing to make sure they face the full wrath of the law,” the statement concluded.

The warning comes as the NFVCB reiterates its commitment to upholding Nigerian laws and maintaining the cultural and moral standards of the nation.
