Telecel Ghana Music Awards Announce Cash Prize For Social Impact Award

The Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs) have announced that the Music for Good Prize winner will receive ₵20 000 (about $1 300) to support their impact project.

To be eligible for the category, musicians must have released a song in the year under review that significantly contributes to a social cause, such as youth mentorship, health, education, economic empowerment, social development or environmental initiatives.

This year, the TGMAs are merging the Music for Good category with the already existing Green Award, which celebrates musicians promoting environmental awareness and sustainability through their music. The TGMAs said the two awards were merged to celebrate musicians’ broader social contributions, expanding the focus beyond just environmental efforts.

“We believe musicians have the talent and power to inspire, connect, and change lives and communities positively,” Telecel Ghana CEO Patricia Obo-Nai said. “The Music for Good category will celebrate and honour musicians who go above and beyond by using their influence for the greater good.”

Theresa Ayoade, the head of Charterhouse which organises the TGMAs, said that the Music for Good Prize aligned with a growing trend in Ghana to recognise artists for their social impact.

Previous winners of the award include Yaa Yaa and Stonebwoy. This year’s winner will be announced on 1 June in Accra. In addition to the cash prize, the winner will receive a recognition plaque.

Meanwhile, the TGMAs, which are celebrating their 25th anniversary this year, recently unveiled emerging rapper Kwesi Amewuga as the winner of the Unsung category for undiscovered local artists, securing him a performance slot at the 1 June awards show.

Kuami Eugene, Stonebwoy and Sarkodie are heading into the awards as this year’s most nominated artists.
