Gyakie Joins In Calls On Ghanaian Telecoms To Lower Mobile Data Costs

Ghanaian singer Gyakie has urged telecommunications companies in Ghana to lower the cost of mobile data. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the artiste emphasized the importance of affordable and accessible data for all Ghanaians.

Gyakie argued that reducing data costs would benefit both consumers and telecom companies, as more affordable data could attract a larger number of subscribers, ultimately boosting profits.

She suggested that by making data more accessible, telecom providers could see increased revenue through a higher user base.

Her post garnered significant attention, with many Ghanaians expressing their support in the comments. Numerous users praised Gyakie for addressing an issue that affects a large portion of the population, with many echoing her concerns and voicing their frustration over the high cost of data in the country.

The rising cost of internet data in Ghana has become a major concern, particularly among the youth, who view affordable internet as a key to various opportunities.

This has led to a vigorous digital campaign, spearheaded by tech influencer Tech in Twi and popular content creator Kwadwo Sheldon, calling on the government and the National Communications Authority (NCA) to take immediate action to reduce data prices.

In response to the growing outcry, the NCA issued a statement in July, promising that data prices would decrease soon. The director of the NCA mentioned that the introduction of a new network would reduce operational costs. However, despite this assurance, Ghanaians on social media continue to express their dissatisfaction with the high data costs.
