Super Eagles Face Setback as Awoniyi Suffers Injury Ahead of AFCON 2023

The Super Eagles’ hopes of securing their fourth Africa Cup of Nations title have taken a hit just months before the tournament. Taiwo Awoniyi, a key forward for the Eagles, will be sidelined for at least four months, extending beyond the 2023 AFCON hosted in Cote d’Ivoire. Nottingham Forest officially announced Awoniyi’s injury on November 23, 2023.

The injury occurred during the Super Eagles’ World Cup qualifying match against Lesotho in Uyo on November 16, 2023. In a statement, Nottingham Forest expressed their support for Awoniyi and confirmed that he underwent surgery.

The released statement stated, “It’s unfortunate news about Taiwo; he’s had surgery and will be out for months. We’re backing him to return quickly and in good shape, but it’s a tough situation and a setback for him. He has become a vital player for us with his goals, and he will be missed. He’s a great guy and a dedicated professional who wants to excel, so it’s tough for him to face this injury. We’ll support him in his journey to come back stronger, just as he did once before. Considering his successful return last season, we’re confident he will give his all again. Though he’ll be back this season, groin surgery requires some time.”

Awoniyi has been a standout performer for Forest since joining last season, contributing significantly to their survival in the league. Despite the setback, he has scored four goals in 11 appearances for Forest this season.
