Social Media User To Spend 6-months In Prison For Defaming The Governor Of Jigawa State

A Facebook user identified as Sabi’u Ibrahim Chamo has been sentenced to prison by a chief magistrate’s court sitting in Dutse, Jigawa State capital for the defamation of character of the state governor, Badaru Abubakar.

It was learnt that the user, Chamo was arrested on Christmas eve, December 24 and detained before he was charged to court for failure to substantiate the allegations he made on Facebook.

Chamo had alleged that the governor had duped many APC aspirants by collecting their money to give them party tickets.

During the trial, after the first information was read to him, Chamo pleaded guilty to the charge and the court sentenced him to six months in prison, with options of payment of N20,000 fine and 20 strokes of cane to serve as a deterrent to others.
