Seun Kuti Criticizes Super Eagles’ Lack of Patriotism After Disappointing Match

Grammy-nominated afrobeat artist, Seun Kuti, has voiced his frustration over what he perceives as a lack of patriotism among Super Eagles players, attributing it to their subpar performance at the national level. Kuti expressed disappointment that while these players excel at their club levels, they seem to lack the same commitment when representing the national team.

In a video shared on his Instagram page, Kuti dismissed the excuse of financial motivation as irrelevant, pointing out that many of these players are already wealthy and don’t necessarily need payment from the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).

Addressing the Super Eagles’ underwhelming 1-1 draw with Equatorial Guinea in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Kuti emphasized the need for players to show more dedication to the national team, stressing the importance of playing for Africa despite the challenges.

He remarked, “Nigerian footballers are not patriotic. I don’t care what anybody says. They are more interested in their oyibo clubs and the glams. They are not patriotic.”

Kuti compared the focused demeanor of European teams in tournaments like the Euros and World Cup to what he perceives as a lack of seriousness among African players during continental competitions. He urged the Super Eagles to exhibit the same commitment and dedication displayed by players at their respective clubs when representing the nation.
