“Is there any law that says the EFCC Chairman can only come from the North?”- Reno Omokri

Nigerian social media activist, author, politician, and former adviser to ex-president Goodluck Johnathan, Reno Omokri have questioned the selection process of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The EFCC was established in 2003, partially in response to pressure from the Financial Action Task Force on Money Laundry, which named Nigeria as one of 23 countries non-cooperative in the international community’s efforts to fight money laundering.

According to Reno Omokri, the EFCC Chairman have all been from the Northern part of Nigeria as he wonders if there are no credible Southerners.

“Is there any law that say the EFCC Chairman can only come from the North? Magu goes and is replaced with another Northerner, Mohammed Umar. There have now been 5 chairmen, each has been a Northern Muslim. What’s happening? Are there no credible Southerners?” Reno tweeted.

Here are the names of the past and present EFCC Chairmen:

  1. Nuhu Ribadu – 2003
  2. Chief (Mrs) Farida Mzamber Waziri – 2008
  3. Ibrahim Lamorde – 2012
  4. Ibrahim Magu – 2015
  5. Mohammed Umar – 2020

Mohammed Umar was recently appointed due to the ongoing investigations that led to the arrest of Magu by the Operatives of the Department of State Service and the Nigeria Police Force.
