ASUU Might Call Off 7-Months Strike On October 21st.

After the Academic Staff Union of Universities ASSU agreed to a unilateral settlement with the federal government on Thursday, October 15, there are several speculations that the body might call off it’s seven months strike soon.

According to several reports reaching us the body might call off it’s strike on Wednesday, October 21st.

The federal government on Thursday, October 15, resolved to pay university lecturers the sum of N30 billion earned academic allowances. Added to this, to put an end to the seven-month-long strike by the union, the federal government also agreed to release N20bn meant for the revitalisation of the education sector.

According to the minister of labour and employment, Chris Ngige, the money would be paid in instalments from May 2021 to January 2022.

However the both parties have not come to a final agreement yet as a conciliatory meeting is to reconvene by October 21st. By then ASUU might agree to call off the strike.

As for now the strike is still on.
