Strike: FG has promised to investigate ASUU’s complaints.

The Federal Government has vowed to handle the danger of a strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) once again.

In an interview with Punch on Wednesday, February 9, 2022, in Abuja, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, made the vow that the government will see to it that the needs of the Union are met.

Members of the union have recently threatened to go on indefinite strike because the federal government has failed to honor some of the agreements it made with them.

In response to ASUU’s threats, Ngige stated that President Muhammadu Buhari has urged him and Education Minister Adamu Adamu to intervene and resolve the union’s issues.

You are aware that the Ministry of Labour is not their employer; the Ministry of Education is.” Our role is to serve as mediators in this situation.

The President has mandated his Chief of Staff and the Minister of Education as well as the Ministry of Labour to step in, but my job is to step in as the reconciliatory officer if both sides refuse to settle their grievances. We will surely look into the matter.” Ngige stated.

Remember that Nigerian universities were closed for nine months in 2020, and they were not reopened until ASUU finished its strike in December of that year.

In 2021, the union planned another indefinite strike, but it was called off by the payment of N22.1 billion in earned allowances and the release of N30 billion in university revitalisation funds.
